Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Committee
Established by the Board in 2023 to develop EDI initiatives, advise CSME leadership, and promote inclusive participation across the Canadian mechanical engineering community.

CSME's Commitment to EDI
The CSME recognizes diversity across all dimensions—including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, religion, and socioeconomic status—as a fundamental strength that drives innovation, excellence, and resilience in the Canadian engineering community. We are committed to creating an inclusive culture where all members feel welcomed, respected, and empowered to contribute their unique perspectives and talents. By actively working to remove systemic barriers and advance equity, we strengthen our profession and serve the broader public interest.

Develop Initiatives
Develop, implement, and monitor EDI-related CSME initiatives across the Society.
Advise CSME Leadership
Advise the leadership and Board of Directors on EDI matters and strategies.
Promote EDI Activities
Promote EDI-related CSME programs and inclusive participation across the community.

The Chair sits on the Board of Directors with full voting privileges.

Formation and membership structure
The Board charged the committee with building representation across diverse backgrounds (including gender, ethnicity, and age), with a recommended size of five to seven members and at least half from underrepresented groups, plus a non-voting ex-officio member from CSME leadership—arrangements now in place.
Initial priorities from the board report
Early work included appointing members, publishing Terms of Reference and an EDI policy statement on the website, and continuing activities from the task force report on EDI.
